Count nouns

Count nouns have two forms. There are Singular and plural.

Singular count nouns

Singular count nouns refer to one person or thing. They cannot be use alone. They must have a determiner.

Plural count nouns

Plural count nouns refer to more than one person or thing.

For the plural form of most nouns,add s.

For nouns that end in ch, x, s, or s sounds, add es.

For nouns ending in f or fe,change f to v and add es.

Nouns ending in vowels like y or o do not have define rules.

Some nouns have different plural forms.

A few nouns have the same singular and plural forms.

Cannot be counted. They usually express a group or a type.

Some nouns refer to groups of people, animals or things. Examples for group nouns:

These group nouns can be use as singular nouns or prural nouns.

  • The government is very unpopular.[Singular]
  • The government are taking bad decisions.[Plural]

  • The largest group are the girls.[Plural]

Things with two parts

Afew plural nouns refer to thing that have two parts. They have no singular form. These are things that we always wear or implements.

Examples:

  • trousers
  • jeans
  • pants
  • sissors
  • spectacles

For talking about one of these items, a pair of... can be used.

  • I get a new pair of spectacles.
  • My brother gifted me a new pair of black shorts.

Proper nouns

Names of people, places and organisations are called proper nouns. Proper nouns are spelled with a capital letter.
