There are seven basic sentence patterns
The English language has many patterns. It has seven basic sentence (or clause) patterns. In the book Rhetorical Grammar, author Martha Kolln describes seven common sentence patterns. She says that 95% of sentences in English fit into these basic patterns. Originally there were 5 Basic English sentence patterns and two more have been added lately to facilitate expression of more ideas in English. The extra two patterns as extensions of SVA and SVOA.
Most simple and complex (but not compound) clauses can be fitted into one of these patterns no matter how long the clauses are. The writer can create a variety of sentences to make the essay rich so that he does not need to be limited to one or two patterns each time he speaks or writes. Understanding and mastering common patterns will not only help you understand grammar better, but also improve your writing skills, too.
