Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object + Object Complement (S+V+O+C)


After some verbs an object alone does not make complete sense. In addition to the object, we need another word to complete the meaning. The word thus used to complete the meaning of the object is called its complement (object complement). The object complement is usually an adjective or a noun phrase.


  1. He painted the wall green.
  2. The noise drove him mad.
  3. They made him supervisor.
  4. That experiment made the world different.
  5. We found the house empty.
  6. I thought the plan unwise.
  7. We consider the matter very serious.
  8. They called their daughter the little princess.
  9. The boy pushed the door open.
  10. The smith beat the hot iron flat.
  11. We named Mr. Jones our temporary chairman.
  12. The thief broke he safe open.
  13. He named his son Jacob.
  14. You have made your shirt dirty.
  15. The team elected the twins co-captains.
  16. I like my coffee strong.
  17. They called the doctor in vain.
  18. The prime minister appointed Mr. Buddhadasa, the Minister of Buddhist Affairs.
  19. I told everything clearly.
